Casa de la Luz

The apartment patio.

This charming home is located just three blocks from the center of town (and 15 kilometers from the Gulf of Mexico and 6 hours from the colonial city of Oaxaca).  This small colonial house was once the home of the town midwife.  For two generations almost everyone in town was born there and they have a deep affection for it.

As a Tropical Guest House, we offer one room by the day, and an apartment/suite by the day, week or month.

The room has a double bed, satellite TV, air conditioning and a shared bath with the owner. It also has a screened patio and seating area that looks onto the garden. We also serve free coffee here in the mornings.

The apartment/suite is on the second floor and has a private entrance, through the garden, from the street. It has two double beds, table and chairs, a full kitchen-including a microwave and coffee maker (complementary coffee, milk and sugar)-air conditioning, satellite TV, and a full tiled bath with an all glass wall. The suite also has three all-glass French doors opening onto a screened patio, with seating , that over looks the garden. Off the patio is a private area for sun bathing.

There is another room that can be made available with a double bed, private bathroom, air conditioning...no TV...for larger families or small groups.

The gay-friendly owner lives in the ground floor unit which shares a small garden courtyard.   He speaks English and some Spanish.  He has lived in Mexico for for more than 10  years and can assist with your travel arrangements.  His email address is: billdelaluz_oaxmx@yahoo.com.

Tlacotalpan is a lazy, tropical colonial town on the Papaloapan River (River of Butterflies, which is over 300 meters wide), 58 miles south of the Port of Veracruz.  Settled by Spaniards in the 16th Century, Tlacotalpan was an important gulf coast river port for the sugarcane and cotton plantations until the late 19th century when it lost the bid for the railroad and the steamships quit coming to call.

Today, its brightly painted houses with Arabic-style portals are lovingly preserved and, in 1998, the entire town was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unspoiled architecture.

Situated on the palm covered delta of the Papaloapan and San Juan rivers, Tlacotalpan is home to hundreds of species of birds and butterflies.  After the raucous Port of Veracruz, this quiet, friendly town provides a perfect inspirational retreat for artists, writers and birders.

As the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska puts it, "When we want to smile, we think of Tlacotalpan."

There are many festivals throughout the year and fun places to see in and around Tlacotalpan.  Click here for detailed information about the State of Veracruz, Mexico, and the area surrounding the town of Tlacotalpan.
